本期，我們來談談see！

下列see的用法你能get幾個？

1. That is the see of Rome.

2. Exucse me. I'm seeing a man about a dog.

3. I don't see eye to eye with him.

4. He's not easy to be fooled. He has seen the elephant.

5. I saw the lions of London yesterday.

That is the see of Rome.

那是羅馬教廷。

see 除了人盡皆知的“看，參觀”（動詞），還能作名詞，意思是“主教教區; 教廷”

Exucse me. I’m seeing a man about a dog.

不好意思，我失陪一下。

這里 see a man about a dog 是美國口語

意為“有點急事，先行告辭”

尤其可以作為上廁所時候說的委婉語！

有的小伙伴可能會問，為什么是 dog，不是 cat, fish...

其實，這里還真可以替換成其他的動物

但最常用的還是狗狗和馬

沒錯！

see a man about a horse 也是一樣的用法！

又比如下面這個例句：

I've just got to visit the ladies' room to see a man about a horse.

不明白這個短語的用法之前，

你以為是去女廁所看馬男？

No!

其實是這位女士找個借口去廁所啦！

和他意見不統一。

這里的 see eye to eye 可不是是“大眼瞪小眼”，或者是“以眼還眼”的意思

而是...如下圖

see eye to eye 真正的意思是 to agree with someone; to share someone's position or opinion，即“觀點一致，意見相同”。

那下面這句話，你該看得懂了吧？

His mother and I don't see eye to eye about his decision to drop out of college

他沒那么容易被忽悠。他可是見過世面的。

第一眼看到這句話的時候，你是不是在想

see the elephant 是美國的俚語，這里還有個故事呢！

在19世紀早期，嘉年華在美國各地巡回表演，每到一個小村莊，都會給當地人們帶來各種新奇的異國事物，其中最吸引人的當屬來自亞洲和非洲的野獸了。大象塊頭最大、在當地人眼里最為奇異，于是成了整個表演的經典節目。所以，see the elephant就漸漸變成了一個慣用語，意思是“看完所有的事物”，就好像在看見了大象后，世界上就再沒什么沒有看過的了。

后來，有很多年輕人紛紛離開鄉村，帶著滿腦子的幻想去城市闖蕩，結果卻遭遇了很多艱難困苦、失望無奈，他們諷刺地用see the elephant指“得到嚴重的教訓”。

鄉親們：狗蛋，城里好玩嗎？

你：I've seen the elephant.

I saw the lions of London yesterday.

我昨天參觀了倫敦的名勝。

這里可不是字面上的“看了獅子”，see the lions表示的是“游覽名勝”
