imply  vs.  infer

Imply infer

The sender of this unspoken message is the one who implies, while the receiver is the one who infers.

imply : 暗示；隱含

to subtly hint ar a hidden message that isn't part of the actual words spoken or written.

infer: 推斷；猜想

to read into a message to understand the deeper meaning （make an assumption based on actions or the way things were said/written）

我們看一個發生在倆室友之間的故事：

Are you really wearing that?

Lily is implying that she doesn't like Jane's outfit.

Lily在暗示她不喜歡Jane的這身打扮

Jane could infer that Lily doesn't like her outfit.

Jane也能從Lily的言語用詞中推斷出她不喜歡自己的這身打扮。

換個角度，設想如果Lily是這樣表達的:

I don't like your outfit. You should change

那她就沒有imply這個行為了，她只是含糊其辭地把想法說了出來。

如果Lily真這么說了，那估計友誼的小船就說翻就翻咯。
